Volkswagen Uses Software On 482K Diesels To Clear Emission Testing

The German automaker, Volkswagen, has been accused of installing software in as many as 482,000 diesel cars to escape the U.S. emission norms. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said on Friday that Volkswagen is guilty of using software on its diesel cars sold in the United States to clear the U.S air laws. The diesel cars of Volkswagen have the potential of exposing the people of the U.S. to harmful pollutants.

The EPA has said that the German auto manufacturer, Volkswagen, who is the parent company of car brands like Audi and Skoda has used what they call ‘defeat device’ to cheat the U.S emission regulators into believing that their diesel cars met with the Clean Air Act standards adopted in the country.

The diesel cars that have been found to violate the clean air act standards set by the federal agency are: the 2009 to 2015 Audi A3, 2009 to 2014 Volkswagen Golf, Beetle and Jetta and the 2014 to 2015 Volkswagen Passat.

The Obama administration has given instructions to Volkswagen to recall as many as half a million of its cars of different models that it has sold in the U.S.A. This is a big setback for the Volkswagen Group as they were doing reasonably well in the U.S. markets. Now, with the emission problems surfacing, there is no doubt that people will retreat from buying the Volkswagen brand in America.

The use of the software to reduce the diesel emissions of the car was noticed by the EPA during its periodic state emission testing of the car. It is only when such tests are conducted that the car’s full emission control systems are thoroughly tested. The controls are turned off during the normal driving conditions. During this time, the car would just spend out 40 times as much of pollution that it is allowed under the Clean Air Act.

The EPA’s assistant administrator for the Office of Enforcement and Compliance, Cynthia Giles, said that she did not expect Volkswagen to indulge in such cheating jobs. The agency had issued the notice of violation to the German automaker. The VW Company has also accepted that it has used the ‘defeat device’ to lower its diesel car’s emission levels. The 4 cylinder Audi and Volkswagen vehicles from the period 2009 to 2015 are the ones recalled.

Volkswagen is also the owner of the higher luxury brands like Porsche and Lamborghini and had just surpassed Toyota as the world’s biggest auto manufacturer.
