The fourth generation of the compact crossover, Kia Sportage, has made its first public appearance at the ongoing 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. This sporty compact crossover gets an even better, sportier look with a new sport-styled GT line trim level and sports tuned transmission option. The United States bound Kia Sportage will be shown during the Los Angeles auto show in November this year.
The Kia Sportage that would be showing up in the United States would be a 1.6 liter T-GDI engine. This is similar to the 1.6 liter turbocharged, four cylinder, and direct injection engine offered in the European Kia Sportage model. The Sportage will offer a maximum power of 174 HP and a torque of 196 pound-feet. It is expected that the U.S bound Kia Sportage would have a change in the torque and power numbers.
The 1.6 liter T-GTI engine will be mated to a seven speed dual clutch transmission that will be offered both as a front wheel drive and all wheel drive. It is expected that the fuel economy of the 4th generation Kia Sportage to improve and offer 33 mpg on highways as compared to 28 mpg in the previous model.
The new Kia Sportage is larger than the outgoing model. There is no change in the ground clearance of the vehicle with the cargo floor now being 1.7 inches lower. The headroom in the front and the rear has been increased a bit and there is also an increase in the front and the rear legroom. Some of the safety features on offer are: lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams and blind spot monitoring.
The interior quality of the new Kia Sportage looks good and better than the outgoing model. The regular instruments get a facelift with a small color display. The large touch screen sits neatly at the center stack. The touch screen is controlled using a series of buttons that are just below the screen and above the HVAC controls.
This new crossover from Kia will reach the North American market with different engines under its hood and it will be bearing the 2017 model year. It is believed that the 7 speed DCT as well as turbocharged 2.0 liter engine will arrive in the North American markets next year. The details of the Kia Sportage that is heading to North America and its pricing will be released in the coming months.
