FRENCH OPEN LOOKAHEAD: Nadal wants more consistent forehand

He had made must one unforced error in the set and dropped only two points on serve.

For Novak Djokovic, first it was a balky right hip that needed treatment from a trainer; later came an embarrassing mistake.

The nine-time French Open champion, who had wanted to change his shorts after putting them on the wrong way round, complained about Bernardes to the ATP, which runs the men’s tour, and has not been officiated by the Brazilian umpire since. That trio put those moments aside and reached the third round, where more significant challenges could await.

“For me, that’s not fair”, Nadal said. “Just haven’t seen it yet”. “When Halys played like this and the balls landed in, there was nothing I could do”.

The American was particularly subpar with her serve, which she said she hasn’t been able to work on properly in practice because of an elbow injury that led her to withdraw from a clay-court tournament in Rome this month. “Hopefully, that will get rid of the area that has been bothering me”. Bouchard, a runner-up at Wimbledon last year, has lost eight of her last nine matches. “There are some chair umpires in some matches that I remember that I wasn’t very happy with how they did their job, but I never thought of requesting a chair umpire not to ever – or whatever, for a certain time – be a chair umpire in my matches. Then I would be in trouble”.

RAFAEL Nadal admits he is eager to find consistency after the Spaniard moved into the French Open second round with a straight sets win over French wild card Quentin Halys. “So I’m going to have to step it up a level”.

Nadal’s only loss in the French tournament was back in 2009 when he was taken out by Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Djokovic faces 19-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, while Murray meets 20-year-old Nick Kyrgios.

Indian ace Mahesh Bhupathi who had paired with Australian rising star Nick Kyrgios, crashed out of men’s doubles in the first round.

He’ll now play the Argentinian Leonardo Mayer who beat Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-1. “But it’s a long way ahead”.

In women’s play, top-ranked Serena Williams improved to 58-1 in first-round matches at majors with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of qualifier Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic. For a few minutes, things didn’t look promising for Djokovic – prone on the court, getting massaged by a trainer.

Djokovic, ranked No. 1, is trying to complete a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

The point went to Muller, who broke there.

Djokovic, though, had the stiffer test against a seasoned 33-year-old opponent, holding on to a world ranking of No 87 and determined to give of his best on the centre court of a slan. “I guess a little bit of lack of concentration…. If it was 2-all, or 2-3 down, I wouldn’t be smiling, for sure”. Roared on by the home crowd, Paire beat the Italian 6-1 6-3 7-5 to book his place in round three. Unlike some faster players whose speed-and thus their game-evaporates in their late 20’s or early 30’s, Federer’s mental fortitude keeps on going.

“I was very exited and nervous”, Wang said. “There was pressure building”.
